Emergency Lighting Tests

" Emergency Lighting is used when normal supply to premises fail. This test is not just for ‘escape lighting’ but also standby lighting which may be used for escape lighting.

If supply to normal lighting or parts of normal lighting to premises fail escape lighting is required to fulfil the following functions:

  1. to indicate clearly and unambiguously the escape routes;

  2. to provide illumination along such routes to allow safe movement towards and through the exits provided;

  3. to ensure that fire alarm call points and fire fighting equipment provided towards and through the exits provided.

Escape lighting is required not only on complete failure of supply to the normal lighting but also on a localized failure, when such a failure would present a hazard, e.g. a single subcircuit on stairways. "
